Grace Manning/Eli Sammler - Once and Again
Aww, the little ship that could! Really, this show was genius. It dealt completely with all the permutations of how divorce affects a person. Besides that, there was this little gem of a ship. Grace is always in control and always afraid of the unknown. Eli is always out of control and always afraid of the unknown. Grace was, at first, the most grating on my nerves. She then became one of my favourites. Eli was, at the last, the most grating on my nerves. He then became my least favourite. Grace hid behind her intense nerd!girl persona with her prickly edge of defence. She was afraid of living and exploring because the risk of getting hurt increased with exposure. She just needed to realise she was loved. Eli hid behind his lackadaisical facade of coolness while inside he was extremely neurotic. He was afraid of disappointing people and failing. He needed to realise someone believed in him. They were never really friends but never really enemies. They both supported each other, kinda. They were built on a huge pile of awkwardness and misunderstanding but it was adorable. They both lived (as much as a teenager could in those days) and became their greatest fears. They believed in each other and then were inevitably let down. And yet, for some inexplicable reason they were always drawn to each other. Oh, and to top it all off they were related. Talk about stacked against the odds. It's like breathing shallow in the deepest part of the ocean. Granted, they were only step-siblings so technically, nothing would be wrong with this and they did know, at least peripherally, about one another's existence before their parents got jiggy wit it so they should have called dibs. On the flip side of that, they probably would have never had a reason to get to know each other without their parents getting it on. However, never in a million billion trillion quadillion gajillion years could they ever have a happy resolve. They share a half-sibling FFS! Can you imagine how awkward Christmas would be? 'This is my girlfri... sister.' The enormity with which they would fail is best told by lowriseflare's future-fic That's How Years Roll Away.
Here's a little taste of their dichotomy:
And kinda their anthem (or any other City and Colour song for that matter):
